How Listeners' L1 Affects Perceived Similarity of American English, Japanese and Korean Vowels
نویسندگان
چکیده
Native speakers of Japanese and Korean assessed perceived similarity between American English vowels and vowels of their L1, and native speakers of American English performed the same task. The results revealed no significant main effects of listener groups, but a significant interaction of vowels by listener groups was confirmed. The results indicate that listeners’ L1 phonology as well as phonetic distance in the vowel space affects perceived similarity between L1 and nonnative phones. The results also imply that what speakers of Japanese and Korean believe are close to their L1 phones are not necessarily perceived as similar by English speakers.

Perceptual assimilation and free classification of German vowels by American English listeners
In order to investigate listeners’ perceptual patterns regarding segments from an unfamiliar language, researchers commonly employ perceptual assimilation tasks. These tasks investigate the perceptual similarity of non-native sounds to L1 sounds, but do not provide information on the perceived similarity among non-native sounds. In order to examine how German vowels are perceived by naïve Ameri...
متن کاملPerception by Japanese, Korean and American listeners to a Korean speaker’s recollection of past emotional events: Some acoustic cues
Acoustic and perceptual analyses of spontaneous Korean were made of a Korean woman recalling past emotional events in her life. A subset of 20 single word utterances and 20 isolated vowels were presented to Japanese, American and Korean listeners who were asked to (1) rate the intensity of the perceived emotion and (2) identify the perceived emotion. Listeners could rate intensity and identify ...
متن کاملInter-language vowel perception and production by Korean and Japanese listeners
This paper investigates the influence of phonological learning upon the perception of non-native vowels. Four groups of Korean and Japanese English learners, at two levels of English experience, and a group of older monolingual Korean listeners were assessed on the perception and production of Australian English monophthongal front vowels: /i: w e æ a:/. Korean is of interest, because of a rece...
متن کاملThe Interaction of the Bilingual’s Two Phonetic Systems: Differences in Early and Late Korean-English Bilinguals
One of the basic questions of bilingual research is to what extent the bilingual’s two phonetic systems influence each other, a question that has occupied a prominent place in bilingual research almost from the outset of the field (see, for example, Weinreich, 1953). Recent studies in bilingual first language acquisition (BFLA) demonstrate that, at least in simultaneous bilingual acquisition, i...
متن کاملEffects of experience on non-native speakers’ production and perception of English vowels
This study assessed the effect of English-language experience on nonnative speakers’ production and perception of English vowels. Twenty speakers each of German, Spanish, Mandarin, and Korean, as well as a control group of 10 native English (NE) speakers, participated. The non-native subjects, who were first exposed intensively to English when they arrived in the United States (mean age"25 year...
